# How to Review Your Credit Reports for Possible Errors

Where to get all three reports free, what to read section by section, and how to mark what needs a second look.

You do not need a service to look at your own reports, and looking at them does not affect your scores. Here is how to do it well.

## Where do I get my credit reports for free?

Go to [AnnualCreditReport.com](https://www.annualcreditreport.com/), the site authorized by federal law. Equifax, Experian and TransUnion currently allow free weekly access through it. You can also call 1-877-322-8228. Avoid look-alike sites that ask for a card number or a subscription to show you a report.

Get all three. Lenders do not all use the same bureau, and mortgage lenders often use all three, so an error on one report matters even if the others are clean.

## Step 2: Check the personal information first

Names, addresses, employers and date of birth. A name or address you have never used can mean your file has been mixed with someone else's, and that person's accounts may be on your report too.

## Step 3: Read every account, one at a time

For each account, check five things:

| Check | What an error looks like |
| --- | --- |
| Is it yours? | A creditor you do not recognize, or an account opened at an address you never lived at. |
| Status | A closed account shown as open, or a paid account shown with a balance. |
| Balance and limit | A balance higher than your statement, or a credit limit lower than your actual limit. A wrong limit makes your utilization look worse. |
| Payment history | A late payment in a month you paid on time. Check against your own records. |
| Dates | An old negative item that should have aged off, or a date of first delinquency that has been reset. |

## Step 4: Look at collections and public records

Confirm the original creditor, the amount, and the date. The same debt should not appear twice, for example once under the original creditor and again under a collector with the full balance on both.

## Step 5: Review inquiries

Hard inquiries come from applications you made. An inquiry from a lender you never applied to deserves a closer look. Soft inquiries, including checking your own credit, do not affect your scores.

## Step 6: Mark, gather, then decide

Circle every entry that fails one of the checks. For each one, note which bureau's report shows it and what document supports your side: a statement, a payment confirmation, a letter. If an account is not yours at all, consider a fraud alert or credit freeze and follow the steps at IdentityTheft.gov.

From here you can dispute directly with each bureau, in writing, at no cost. Or, if the list is long or you want a second set of eyes, that is exactly what a [review with CreditForwardRepair](/credit-repair) is for.
