# Prepare before the dealership, not in the finance office.

Dealers pull your credit on the spot and lenders decide in minutes. Knowing what is on your reports, and correcting what can be corrected, is the part you control before you walk in.

Start with your goal. No documents needed for this first step.

## Who is this for?

Anyone planning to finance a vehicle, whether a truck, SUV or sedan in the next several months, and anyone who has already been declined or offered a rate that felt out of line.
It is especially useful if you have never looked at your own reports, or if a previous vehicle loan ended badly and you are not sure how it is being reported.

## The problem

Auto lenders react to specific things: recent late payments, high balances relative to limits, collections, a prior repossession, and accounts they cannot verify. One inaccurate entry in any of those categories can change the offer you receive or whether you receive one.
Most people find out in the finance office, when there is no time left to fix anything.

## What does CreditForwardRepair do, and not do?

### What CreditForwardRepair does

- Reviews your reports with vehicle financing in mind and points out what an auto lender is likely to focus on.
- Identifies inaccurate or unverifiable entries and helps you dispute them before you apply.
- Explains how a denial notice works and how to get the free report a lender used.
- Helps you understand the difference between a lower payment and a cheaper loan.

### What CreditForwardRepair does not do

- Arrange, broker or approve vehicle financing. CreditForwardRepair is not a lender or a dealer.
- Promise a specific rate, a specific score, or an approval.
- Remove accurate late payments, repossessions or collections that are within their reporting period.
- Recommend a dealer or lender.

## What to prepare

Nothing is required to ask. These make your report review more useful.
- Pull your reports and note anything you do not recognize, especially auto-related accounts.
- If a lender declined you, keep the notice. It names the bureau used and the main reasons.
- Decide on a realistic total budget, not only a monthly payment. Our rate comparison shows why.
- Write down how soon you need the vehicle, since that shapes what can realistically be corrected first.

## Questions about vehicle financing

Direct answers, with sources on the [full FAQ](/faq).

### What should I do after an auto-loan denial?

Ask the lender for the specific reason. When a lender declines you based on your credit report, it must tell you which bureau's report it used, and you can get a free copy of that report within 60 days.
Read that report for errors, and compare it with the reason you were given. A denial is often about one or two items, such as a recent late payment, a high balance, or an account you do not recognize. That is the place to start.

### Can a lower payment mean a more expensive loan?

Yes. Stretching a loan over more months lowers the payment but usually increases the total interest you pay, sometimes by a lot.
A $25,000 loan at the same rate costs more in total over 84 months than over 60 months, even though the monthly figure is smaller. Compare total cost, not only the payment. Our calculator on the home page shows both.

### Does a stronger credit score guarantee vehicle financing?

No. Lenders also weigh your income, existing debt, the vehicle, the down payment and their own lending rules.
A stronger report improves your options and can affect the rate you are offered, but the lending decision belongs to the lender. CreditForwardRepair prepares your report; it does not approve loans.

### Does reviewing my own report hurt my score?

No. Checking your own credit report or score is a soft inquiry, and soft inquiries do not affect your credit scores.
Hard inquiries, which happen when you apply for credit, can have a small temporary effect. Reviewing your own reports before you apply is one of the simplest things you can do.

### Why can my credit scores differ?

Because there is no single credit score. Different scoring models, different versions of the same model, and different bureau data all produce different numbers.
A score from a free app, a score a lender pulls, and a mortgage-specific score can all differ for the same person on the same day. Lenders choose the model they use. Treat any one score as a general indicator, not the number a lender will see.
